A commercial system should be specified with real-life failures in mind. Ask what happens during a power cut, internet outage, fire alarm activation or fault with a reader. Battery backup, protected cabling, mechanical overrides and suitable emergency release devices all have a role. There is no single answer that suits every door. The correct setup balances security with life safety and the practical needs of the business.
Regular testing is equally important. Door closers, release devices, readers and backup power should be checked, while damaged fobs and old user accounts should be dealt with promptly. An access system that has not been maintained can become a source of frustration just when you need it most.
